Today my boys, 14-white team, played out at El Camino College. We finished the day with a 2 win and 1 loss record. We started off the day with a 2 set win to beat Balboa Bay, coming from behind in both sets. Our second match of the day, we played Pacific Palisades. This match was an incredible display of volleyball by the boys. We clicked on every level and won in 2 quick sets. The final match of the day we played against high line. Both teams were 2-0 going into the final match of the day. This was by far the toughest test of the day. We fell short, but the boys battled until the very end. I am very proud of the boys for the way they played and can’t wait for a great season.

Brad Powell

An early start against the most talented team we’ve seen so far this season was a rough way to start the day. The girls got their first taste of receiving jump serves and a consistent offensive attack resulting in an 0-2 loss to the Starlings. Fortunately after a couple of hours off and an inspiring visit from TVC 17?s team, the girls got their smiles back and never lost them for the rest of the day. Match #2 was against 900 sq. ft. of Laguna who led most of game 1. Our girls came storming back to win with consistent play by every player on the court. Game 2 of match 1 was more of the same consistent team effort from every single girl.

Our final match we just over powered Seal Beach with our strong serving both in games 1 and 2.

Some highlights:

Our wins were complete team efforts. I can’t think of a single girl who didn’t contribute in a significant way. This should make every player, parent and coach proud of how cohesive this group is becoming.

Kelsey had a breakout tournament starting with some great passes. Then she scored a bunch of points with some underhand missiles from the service line. She finished her day with some great kills including our team’s first “1.”

Amber really stepped up her leadership on the court. We saw her lining players up into better passing positions on her own and inspiring her teammates continuously throughout the match with encouraging words.

Maile had her best serving day causing major trouble for each team’s service reception.

Another great weekend….the next tournament can’t come soon enough.

12?s great weekend

Couldn’t be prouder of the girls and their play in their first ever matches

as a team. Every one of our 10 players contributed in a BIG way throughout

the day. Our 1st match was a barn burner going 3 games with steady play in

games 1 and 2 with solid passing from everyone and excellent setting from

captains Amber and Maile. Then in game 3 Bella served the other team off the

court with some serious missiles rattling off 9 points in a row. End result,

a 15-4 victory and very happy girls.

Match 2 was tough as we played against a very scrappy team who knows how to

hustle. Taylor, Kaitlyn, and Ansley really stepped up their passing throughout the match while Emily and Kelsey terminated the ball. We went to a third game again and found ourselves behind late in game 3. We subbed Ambika in to serve and she stepped up perfectly providing some much needed points. After siding out we needed a few more points to finish the match. We put our trust in our youngest player, subbing in Ivana to serve. She stepped back and delivered in the clutch paired with solid defense from the rest of the girls. When we scored the match winning point the gym erupted with girls, parents and coaches jumping up and down screaming!

Match 3 was a tough battle against a very TALL Bakersfield team. We had some bright moments and faced the toughest serves we had seen all day. A 2-0 loss meant an overall record of 2 wins and 1 loss, a very good start to what is bound to be an exciting season.

Special thanks to the parents who were all-stars encouraging and feeding all the girls all day.

Our boys 14 Black team played in their first tournament this past weekend and went in ranked #31 in the SCVA. After losing two close matches in 3 games to the #18 and #23 teams, the boys beat the #26 team in two games and will move up 5 spots in the rankings for the next tournament on February 4th. Coach Darin is very excited about the way the boys played and is looking forward to even more improvent as the season continues. The team was led by Austin McBain, who tallied more than 30 kills on the day and Robert Birones who has made incredible improvement already this season. It’s going to be a great season!

Garry Currier

Saturday was a great day for the 13?s Garry team. The girls played hard in a very good 5 team pool. After beating a strong 14?s team in two, the girls had no break playing a very good and rested team from Bakersfield. The girls pushed hard but fell short in a close two games. We then played Coast VBC. The girls showed a lot of heart in the first game coming back from a 24-17 deficit to tie it at 24 but just didn’t have anything left in the tank with no break in three hours. We lost in two. After a 20 minute break the girls came out energized and beat a very strong team from Sports Shack. I am very proud of these girls. They have showed a lot of improvement and look forward to working our way up into stronger divisions.

13?s Garry played with a lot of heart and learned a lot. With eight 12yr olds and most of these girls still learning the rotations, 13?s Garry had to play against some strong 14?s teams. We played strong against the number 3 seed team of Coast Volleyball Club in the first match together as a team but fell a little short and lost in a close 2 games. Our next match was against the number 4 seed team 14?s Showcase VBC. The girls got together in this match and played like a team and won. Our saying this year is “keep the ball in play” and the girls did that this match in 2 games. We then played the number 2 seed, SVVC 14?s team, in a game where the girls lost in 2 games but wow, what an upside we have. We look forward to playing strong in silver division and then working our way up to gold.

2/13/12 – 3rd Qualifier

We were cautiously optimistic heading into the final qualifier with only 6 girls available as the #4 seed in our pool. The girls knew we would face our toughest competition to date with an opportunity to play against a much quicker pace. We started off slow (asleep??) in our first match against the #12 overall seed (San Gabriel Elite), then showed glimpses of our true potential in the second match against the #5 seed (Surfside) when our consistent serving forced a timeout. I need to point out how the girls’ play seemed to suddenly improve upon the arrival of Erika in her brand new cast to support her team and literally count smiles for me!! We really tried to stress teamwork, leadership, and showing a joy & passion for the game of VB during that second match. After a short break where we were motivated watching TVC Brad’s 12s team compete enthusiastically, we returned to the court to play WAVE. After a close first game, we turned up the heat. Some of the best rallies I’ve seen to date helped us clinch the 2nd game and force a 3rd game tiebreak. We started off with continued strong serving and never looked back. Throw in a couple of key blocks, great defensive plays, a few perfectly timed tips, strong freeball passing and crushing repetitive backrow attacks and the final score of 15 – 5 was WELL DESERVED!! I couldn’t be more proud of the girls and really look forward to starting the season in the top 24 DIV 3 Gold!

1/31/12 12′s Alice – 2nd Qualifier

We found ourselves a little shorthanded during the 2nd qualifier due to state cup soccer, but managed to keep pace with only 7 girls on the roster.

Despite uncharacteristic serving problems, the girls were able to maintain our leads in both games of the first match through sheer determination. We got back to form in the 2nd match with a little motivation from our enthusiastic 17s team who showed up to cheer the girls onto victory.

Despite some great long rallies, the final match against BKFD Jamba proved to be a little more than we were prepared for so early in the season. It was a great opportunity to play against a more experienced team and witness the speed of the game that lies ahead. Our very athletic group of girls is now assured of a spot in the GOLD division to begin the regular season. The

actual seed will be determined by the effort they put forth in the 3rd and final qualifier in 2 wks. Can’t wait!!

Our 2nd year 12?s team is off to a great start! Serving and passing is truly key to success at this age, so it’s very evident good things lie ahead for this group of enthusiastic girls. We overwhelmed the competition from Seal Beach by posting a string of service aces to start the match and continued to keep them off balance for our first win of the season. Great free ball passing in the second match against Desert Sports allowed our setters to get on track and run some plays in system. Our dominance in the final match against the 1st year team from Wave gave us an opportunity to show off our offensive weapons and gave our fans much to cheer about. We can’t wait to get back in the gym to prepare for the next tournament. I love working with this group of girls and look forward to a great season!

My amazing girls 14s team went to Cal State Fullerton this weekend and placed 2nd in our pool. Their serves aced the first team off the court. We went 2-1 and our loss went to three games so it was a close battle, that next time will be ours. These girls played exceptionally well for their first tournament and I expect great things from this team this season. Every tournament there will be major improvement, I am excited for the 21st.

Feb 7th

This past weekend my girls were excited to be the number one seed in our pool and came ready to play. We started out playing Club Magnum and had great serving and passing from everyone on the court. We won the match in two games and were happy to start the day with a good win. Next we played Club Tandem and again got the win. Our setting and hitting were working in sync and the girls played great. Our third match was against California Blue and we were focused and wanting the win to close the day with a win. We had a few missed serves but the girls battled all the way until the final point and got the win. We went 3 – 0 this weekend and took first in our pool. The improvements in the girls from our tournament two weeks ago was very visible. Our serve receive was the biggest improvement making it easier for our setter and hitters. I expect for continued success and improvement in hopes to win our pool again next tournament.

TVC’s 15/16 Mike’s team had our first tournament this past weekend. The girls had been bonding well together as a team and were very excited to play their first matches together. In our first match we played a tough SVVC team that was the number 1 seed in our pool. Although we lost in two games, the girls never gave up and keep playing all the way through. Our second game was against Cross Point. The girls were ready to play and hungry for their first win as a team. Everyone on the team played great as we won in three games. We were able to get on a roll with our serving which led to free balls coming our way and the girls took advantage of it. We played a very well rounded match and were ready for the next challenge. Our third and final game was against Epic. We stayed hot with our serving and took game one. In game two we had a few bad calls go against us and lost by two, taking the match to a third game. In the final game we fought until the end but fell a couple points short. Overall I think the tournament was a success, we saw a lot of things that the girls did really well and also a few things that we still need to work on. We are continuing to work hard in order to get ready for our next tournament.

Second Qualifier: January 21st

In our second qualifier we showed great improvement individually and as a team. The girls came out excited and confident in their rotations. The experience from the previous qualifier and the extra practice proved invaluable throughout the day. In our first match we played against a well-matched Laguna Beach team, losing the first game 17-25, then rallying in the next two games 25-22 and 15-11 to win our first match of the season. The next match against a Pali team we struggled at the start with our receive but made some great serving runs which were not enough losing 15-25 & 21-25. Our third match against Top Gun the girls were much more in tune with the pace of the game. Unfortunately we could not close the games losing 20-25 & 23-25. It was a great day overall and I know after we were done the girls were determined to get back to work and improve for the next week.

Last weekend my team played exceptionally well considering the youth of our group. We battled throughout the day learning our rotations and getting accustomed to the pace of the game. Unfortunately we did not come out with any wins but most of our matches were close and with more experience and practice this team has the talent to be very competitive. I look forward to the season and the growth from which we will see from this past weekend.

Feb 5th Qualifier #2
We had a rough start to our day when we lost to the 3rd seed in our pool in 2, but finished the day strong by winning the next two matches in 3 games each. We finished with a tie for 1st but took the 1st place seed because we beat the team head to head. We are continuing to learn what it takes to play at a high level, and we are learning that we CAN play at a high level. We are definitely starting in gold division which is very exciting, but our next tournament will determine what division in gold we will be starting in. We will be a 3rd seed which means we are predicted to start in D3, but I am hoping to make some big upsets on Feb 25th! Can’t wait!

Jan 22nd Qualifier #1
As a first tournament, it was definitely a learning experience for myself as well as the team. We came in seeded 2nd in our pool and finished 3rd. We had a very strong 4th seed in our pool and unfortunately lost that match, however we learned a lot about each other in the process. We have a lot of talented girls on this team and it has been fun to see them grow as a team and as individuals even this early in the season!

Mark Roberts

In the first Qualifier, our 17’s came in as the 61st seed overall and the 4th seed in their pool. The girls handled the 2nd seed, Club West 17s, 25-21, 25-21.Next they played Wave 18-1s and got a fairly firm introduction to the 18’s division. In the third match, they beat up the 3rd seed, So Cal Jrs, 25-17, 25-16. TVC 17’s earned second place in pool play and will sit out the next qualifier. They will start the season in the Gold division and will be giving teams fits all season long.

TVC 14s Mark came in as a 2 seed in the Gold division. The extremely athletic girls had moments of brilliance during the day. They earned second place in pool play and will be sitting out the 2nd Qualifier. They are a very solid Gold team. Division One?
